All One's Soul - DiVA Cologne 2005 ALP GALLERIES is
proud to present at DiVA “Aesthetic Precision of Perception”
or “Glass Brick Art.” Willi Bucher and Ralf Kopp live and
work in Darmstadt, Germany. They have shown their works in various solo
and group exhibitions in Europe, China and United States. Since 1980,
Willi Bucher has been working as a painter and as an art exhibition architect.
Ralf Kopp has been working as a commercial designer as well as a video
and computer artist. Willi Bucher, the painter, and Ralf Kopp, the computer
and video artist, in their joint work, create video and multimedia installations.
And now their latest work with glass bricks is a novelty in the projection
of moving pictures in glass. In “The Stars Stay Still” three
glass bricks become three image carriers. Here the classical form of the
triptych is used because of its alter-similar composition and spiritual
order; however the treatment is stylized to a modern medium. Not only
the aesthetic quality is ensured, but the “beautiful, new world”
becomes itself a labyrinth. As the word ”Self” illuminated
in the middle frame starts to entwine with other words, the human portraits
in the outer left and right frames start to entwine to the diminished
sounds of everyday life.
What Remains?
The untangling of the labyrinth becomes a line that leads to the “Happy
End”. The “Happy End” is then actively displaced by
the words “Forget Me Not” in the centre frames while the two
outer frames double up the portraits, hinting at the idea of reproduction.
Being “transported into no man’s land” could be the
message. “All One’s Soul” turns the calmness on. In
the complete sense of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius: “Find your
peace within. The mind is content with its own right actions, and the
tranquillity they bring.” The body motion within the glass brick
transcends. The glass brick as image carrier symbolizes the meaning of
the picture world as small. It is in this similar way that a transparent
lighter and miniature glass bottle becomes not only the image carrier
but also the transporters of the meaning. The miniaturization of the objects
is a reference to the greatness of phenomena – like the American
flag.
Bucher and Kopp not only refer to the necessary dialogue of art and the
image of man through topics such as individualizing and value erosion,
but with the glass brick as image carrier also show unpretentiously the
aesthetic precision of perception.
